SMT Equipment Selection Guide
Wave soldering remains the most cost-effective method for through-hole and mixed-technology assembly. This guide gives you direct criteria for choosing the right machine.
Step 1: Wave Soldering or Selective Soldering?
The first decision is whether you need full-wave soldering or selective (point) soldering. Most production lines start with a standard wave solder machine and add selective soldering for complex boards.
| Type | Best For | S&M Models |
|---|---|---|
| Wave Soldering | Standard through-hole boards; highest throughput | SA-350 / SA-450 / SA-610 |
| Selective Soldering | Mixed-tech boards with SMD on one side | SM-LI / SM-LII Series |
Can I run both wave and selective soldering on the same board?
Step 2: Choose Board Width Capacity
Board width determines which machine series fits your production. S&M offers three standard widths.
| Machine | Max PCB Width | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|
| SA-350 | 350mm | Compact lines, LED modules |
| SA-450 | 450mm | Standard industrial boards |
| SA-610 | 610mm | Large boards, power electronics |
Step 3: Standard or Nitrogen Atmosphere?
Most wave soldering applications run in standard air atmosphere. Nitrogen is required only for boards with specific quality or surface finish requirements.
- Standard air — suitable for HASL or leaded solder surface finish, IPC Class 2 products.
- Nitrogen — required for OSP surface finish, high-reliability automotive (AEC-Q100), medical electronics.
What is the cost difference between standard and nitrogen?
Step 4: Choose Your Production Volume
Production volume determines whether you need an inline (continuous) or off-line (batch) machine configuration.
| Configuration | Throughput | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Inline (SA series) | Up to 3000 boards/hour | High-volume production lines |
| Off-line (SAT series) | Up to 1500 boards/hour | Medium-batch, flexible production |
